SB1021-70147r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70147 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Burgau. 1/4 Kreutzer, 1793-H. Günzburg Mint. Franz II. NGC MS-64 Brown. This beautifully preserved near-Gem example is vastly superior than normally encountered exhibiting a bold strike with smooth surfaces displaying rich chocolate brown patina." Günzburg was in the Austrian Burgau, now part of Bavaria. The early coinage from this mint is listed under Burgau. The SCWC lists the coinage struck after Maria Theresia's death in 1780 under Germany, Further Austria, and notes this type was struck 1792-93 and 1797-1800. All of these lands were seized by Napoleon in 1806 and handed over to Baden, Wurttemberg and Bavaria. Some in the imperial administration wanted to take them back at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 but prince Metternich vetoed the idea and they remain part of Germany today.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not scarce.

Specification: copper.
