Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32088

This specimen was lot 32088 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Holy Roman Empire. Taler, 1694. Hall Mint. Leopold I. PCGS AU-58. Blanketed with enamoring antique toning and quite enticing to the eye, this near-Mint State example offers honest wear in conjunction with deep originality." Austrian thalers for 1694 include KM 1303.2/Dav-3243 (young armored bust), KM 1303.3/Dav-3244 (older draped bust), KM 1303.4/Dav-3245 (older armored bust, shown here, struck 1694-1704) and KM 1349/Dav-3242 (wreath on obverse and reverse). None are rare. The initials "IAK"" are on the truncation of the bust.
