Künker sale 406, lot 4523

This specimen was lot 4523 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand III. 1625-1637-1657. Reichstaler 1640, Graz. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Austria, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, thaler of 1640, Graz mint. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

Austrian thalers of 1640 include KM 840/Dav-3174, KM 881/Dav-3186 (shown here), KM 882/Dav-3175 and KM 883/Dav-3175A. This type was struck 1640 only and is somewhat scarce. The matching double thaler (Dav-A3186) appears occasionally.
