Sincona sale 90, lot 1582

This specimen was lot 1582 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 44,000 CHF (about US$58,142 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Ferdinand III. 1637-1657. 2 Dukaten 1640, Prag. Münzmeister Jakob W. Wolker. Sehr selten. NGC AU58. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand III, 1637-57, double ducat of 1640, Prague mint. Very rare, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This type of 1638-40 is rare. The superseding type (KM 458) with a laureate bust is slightly more available. It was formerly listed by Friedberg under Austria.
