Heritage sale 3037, lot 31002
Australia H3037-31002r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31002 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "George V Shilling 1921 MS63 PCGS, star issue. A great conditional rarity; in fact, the only Mint State offering of this date that we have been able to trace over the past decade. The next closest example was one sold by Spink in October, 2006. That coin was graded 'cleaned, otherwise about uncirculated.' Despite being a somewhat problematic piece, it still hammered at 2,100 GBP (about US$4,000 at the time). The current coin, on the other hand, is unquestionably superior. Not only is it a solid MS63, but it has very pleasant gray toning with significant underlying luster. A very choice piece. From The Prager Collection Of Australian Coins." The type was struck 1911-36 at London, Melbourne and Sydney (this specimen). Though the type is not rare, the price ascends rapidly with grade. This date is rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,641,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, 0.925 fine silver, .168 troy oz ASW, 23.5 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by E. B MacKennal and W. H. J. Blakemore.
