Sincona Auction 103, lot 178

This specimen was lot 178 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$8,382 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Augsburg, Stadt. Doppeltaler 1629, Augsburg. Mit Titel Ferdinands II. Münzmeister Johann Bartholomäus Holeisen d. Ä. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, city of Augsburg, double thaler of 1629, Augsburg mint, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Very rare, Extremely Fine, Nicely toned.)"

This rare type was struck 1628-29 and this example is a 1628, not a 1629 (MDCXXIX). The ravages of the Thirty Years War ended the town's prosperity.
