Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 34001
SB524-34001r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34001 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGUILLA. Anguilla - Philippines. Dollar, 1967. NGC VF Details--Cleaned. A "Liberty Dollar" counterstamped on a 1908-S Philippines Peso to support the Anguillan secession movement. SCARCE on this host coin, and desirable as such despite the noted cleaning." A newspaper editor and coin collector in San Francisco fabricated these to raise money for his friends in Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean. He counterstamped a variety of readily available silver coins, including this peso. As they never circulated, Krause has consigned them to Unusual World Coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 20 g, 0.800 fine silver, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KMX-5.
