Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73088
SB923-73088r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73088 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGUILLA. Anguilla - Peru. Dollar, 1967. PCGS VF-35. A "Liberty Dollar" counterstamped on a Peru Sol of 1925 (KM-218.1) to support the Anguillan Secession Movement. A somewhat circulated but still quite original example of the type, struck on a less commonly seen host coin. This attractive Dollar retains most of the original black ink within the characters of the counterstamped legends." A newspaper editor and coin collector in San Francisco fabricated these to raise money for his friends in Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean. He counterstamped a variety of readily available silver coins, including this Peruvian one sol. As they never circulated, Krause has consigned them to Unusual World Coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 25 g, 0.500 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM X-3.
