SB523-71141r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71141 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGUILLA. Anguilla - Mexico. Dollar, 1967. PCGS AU-58. A "Liberty Dollar" counterstamped on a Mexico 5 Pesos of 1948 (KM-465) to support the Anguillan Secession Movement. A SCARCE Anguillan piece with much lustrous brilliance remaining on the lightly toned host coin. The counterstamp is bold and legible, making for a charming overall example." A newspaper editor and coin collector in San Francisco fabricated these to raise money for his friends in Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean. He counterstamped a variety of readily available silver coins, including this Mexican five pesos. As they never circulated, Krause has consigned them to Unusual World Coins.

Recorded mintage: 1,500.

Specification: host coin 30 g, 0.900 fine silver, .868 troy oz ASW, 40 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM X2.
