SB523-71139r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71139 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGUILLA. Anguilla - Mexico. Dollar, 1967. PCGS MS-62. A "Liberty Dollar" counterstamped on a Mexico 10 Pesos of 1956 (KM-474) to support the Anguillan Secession Movement. Boldly struck on a lightly toned host. A pleasing example of this SCARCE type with especially sharp lettering." A newspaper editor and coin collector in San Francisco fabricated these to raise money for his friends in Anguilla, an island in the Caribbean. He counterstamped a variety of readily available silver coins, including this Mexican ten pesos. As they never circulated, Krause has consigned them to Unusual World Coins.

Recorded mintage: 250.

Specification: host coin: 28.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, 40 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM X6.
