Alsace 1632 thaler Dav-3355
This specimen was lot 938 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €300 (about US$425 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, Léopold V, archiduc (1619-1632), AR Taler, 1632, Ensisheim. Au titre de landgrave d'Alsace. D/ B. couronné et cuir. à d., ten. un sceptre sur l'épaule et la garde de son épée. La date à d. dans le champ. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or, entre les écussons de Habsbourg et Ferrette. Nettoyé. Très Beau à Superbe. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Leopold V, 1619-32, silver thaler of 1632, Ensisheim mint, with the title of landgrave of Alsace. Obverse: armored and crowned bust right, bearing a sword and scepter, with the date in the field; reverse: crowned arms, Golden Fleece around, with the escutcheons of Hapsburg and Ferette. Cleaned, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This thaler was struck 1631-32 and is fairly common. Leopold, who was also count of Tyrol, was one of the last Hapsburg archdukes to enjoy the mint right. Ensisheim would fall to the French at the end of the Thirty Years War.
