Alsace (1630-32) 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 1400 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 3,800 CHF (about US$4,613 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Erzherzog Leopold V. 1619-1632. 1/4 Taler o. J. (1630-32), Ensisheim. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS62. Herrliche Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Leopold V, 1619-32, undated quarter thaler, Ensisheim mint. Extremely rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Most attractively toned.)"
This rare quarter thaler was struck at Ensisheim in Alsace for the archduke Leopold V. Ensisheim would fall to the French at the end of the Thirty Years War. The second specimen was lot 330 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Leopold V. 1619-1632. 1/4 Reichstaler o. J. Ensisheim. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Theodor Voltz, Auktion Münzen und Medaillen AG 82, Basel 1996, Nr. 142. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Leopold V, 1619-32, undated quarter thaler, Ensisheim mint. Extremely rare, very fine.)"
