Künker Auction 441, lot 4701
Ensisheim in upper Alsace. The political situation is of 1477, on the collapse of the Burgundians. Upper Alsace would be ruled by the Hapsburgs until 1648 when it passed to France.

This specimen was lot 4701 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €750 (about US$1,032 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Rudolf II., 1576-1612. Reichstaler 1612, Ensisheim. Posthume Prägung. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Kommerzialrat Dr. Herbert Wenzel, Wien. (Holy Roman Empire, Rudolf II, 1576-1612, thaler of 1612, Ensisheim mint, posthumous strike. Handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

In addition to the variety shown here, we also note KM 247.5/Dav-3035A (lion's head on shoulder). The SCWC lists this type under several varieties for 1606-12. It is somewhat scarce. Austria lost her holdings in Alsace to France during the Thirty Years War.
