Ensisheim in upper Alsace. The political situation is of 1477, on the collapse of the Burgundians. Upper Alsace would be ruled by the Hapsburgs until 1648 when it passed to France.

This specimen was lot 52200 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Alsace. 2 Talers, 1609. Ensisheim Mint. Rudolph II. NGC MS-62. A RARE and desirable type, especially in such an elevated state of preservation, this double-sized crown presents deep gunmetal gray toning and stands as the sole specimen of the type in the NGC census." This double thaler was struck 1603-04 and 1607-09 but is rare. The accompanying single thaler (Dav-3035) is much more available. The area passed under French rule during the Thirty Years Year.
