Afghanistan AH 1217/1 2 mohurs Fr-7
The first specimen was lot 26377 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN. Durrani Dynasty. 2 Mohurs, AH 1217 Year 1 (1802/3). Bahawalpur Mint. Mahmud Shah. PCGS Genuine--Mount Removed, AU Details. A VERY RARE double weight denomination, this specimen is largely without evidence of much time in circulation, and likely remains so well preserved on account of its use as a jewelry piece. As such, the noted mount removal does little to detract from its immense desirability. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This rare type was struck AH 1217-1218. Bahawalpur is today in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The second specimen was lot 983 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $19,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "Durrani Shahs. Mahmud Shah. First reign, AH 1215-1218 / AD 1800-1803. AV Double Mohur. Bahawalpur mint. Dually dated AH 1217 and RY 1 (4 May AD 1802-22 April AD 1803). Persian couplet citing Mahmud Shah; AH date to left / Mint and RY formula. Edge: /////.
