Afghanistan AH 1216 mohur
This specimen was lot 496 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $10,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "DURRANI: Taimur Shah, 1772-1793, AV mohur, Herat, AH1216, actually an issue of the upcoming Mahmud Shah when in opposition to Shah Zaman, who ruled AH1207-1216; struck during the very briefly between the ousting of Zaman, who dies in exile in 1261/1845, and the coronation of Mahmud later in 1216; unique and unpublished (incorrectly assigned on the slab to Zaman Shah), NGC graded AU50, RRRR. The Herat silver rupees struck posthumous[ly] in the name of Taimur were struck AH1208-1212 and briefly in 1216 (RRR). The gold dinars have been published for 1208-1209, and this seems to be first known example dated 1216. There are none on CoinArchives or Zeno, and none in the standard publications." The SCWC lists Herat mint mohurs from Taimur Shah (KM 386, AH 1190-1208) and from Shah Zaman (KM 389, AH 1212-1215). The reverse of KM 389 is nearly identical to the present piece.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: 10.7-10.9 g, gold, 21.5-23 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: A-3099M, KM unlisted.
