Cuba 1988 25 pesos Fr-22
This specimen was lot 30675 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof 25 Pesos 1988 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Havana mint. With an incredibly low mintage of just 15 pieces, this exceptionally wondrous gem offers impeccable surfaces and an enchanting golden-orange tone, along with highly mirrored fields and superbly frosted devices. A true catch for any collection of Cuban rarities." Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. Marti, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia.
Recorded mintage: 50 plus 15 proofs.
Specification: 7.77 g, .900 fine gold, .25 troy oz, 20 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 213, Fr-22.
