Austria 1546 ducat Fr-36
This specimen was lot 977 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,785 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Ferdinand I. 1521-1564. Dukat 1546, Linz. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleine Kratzer. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand I, 1521-64, ducat of 1546, Linz mint. Very rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Small scratches.)"
We feel the auction cataloguers erred in attributing this issue to Linz as the reverse lacks the Linz arms shown in Friedberg. We believe this was made in Vienna, as Friedberg states for Fr-36. This type was struck intermittently 1528-64.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.43 g.
