Austrian Netherlands 1752(h) escalin
This specimen was lot 687 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €170 (about US$221 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR escalin, 1752, Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., brandissant une épée et ten. l'écu de Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Fines traces d'ajustage. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver escalin of 1752, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and supporting the arms of Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Fine traces of adjustment marks, Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck in 1751-54 and 1763-68 at Antwerp, Bruges and later Brussels during the reign of Maria Theresia. The escalin denomination was a holdover from Spanish rule in the seventeenth century and was struck until the collapse of the ancien regime. The Austrians lost Belgium to Revolutionary France in 1797.
