Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21106

This specimen was lot 21106 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1791-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield. Struck in the name of Charles IV, but with the bust of Charles III. RARE three year transitional bust type. A handsome and well made survivor exhibiting bold details with even wear complemented by attractive mottled golden-gray patina. A nice example from this highly sought after mint sure to spirited bidding from collectors. From the BKingdom Collection." The Santiago mint struck eight reales with the bust of Charles III (shown here) and Charles IV (KM 51) in 1791. Both are scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: 167,000 (KM 39 + KM 51).
