The first specimen was lot 70242 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $90. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1896-Mo B. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-63. A deeply toned and choice minor, this piece presents some alluring underlying luster throughout." This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Mexico City mint. Assayer M exists but is very scarce. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898.

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.

Recorded mintage: 340,000 (including assayer M).
