France 1793-I 2 sols KM-621.7
This specimen was lot 43205 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. National Convention. Bell Metal 2 Sols, Year II/1793-I. Limoges Mint. PCGS VF-35. Struck upon a stunningly thick and overweight planchet, this example weighs over twice what would otherwise be expected for the type. Rather extensively circulated, as is evidenced by its honest wear across both sides. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Schulman in 1952 for $10). Ex: Howard D. Gibbs Collection (Hans Schulman - 10/1952) Lot # 101." This coin was minted at Limoges during the throes of the Revolution. 1793 was the year the king was tried and executed. Amid the chaos, large quantities of these copper two sols were issued, along with six and twelve deniers (¼ and ½ sols). The 1791-93 issues bear the bust of the king but his ouster forced the removal of his portrait. The obverse shows the tablet of the law with the motto, "LES HOMMES SONT EGAUX DEVANT LA LOI," (all men are equal before the law) and the reverse shows the balance scales of justice. This type was hurriedly and crudely made and is rarely found better than Very Good.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date of a scarce type.
Specification: 24.47 g, copper or brass, 34 mm diameter, this specimen 40.3 g.
