Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 2321

This specimen was lot 2321 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €220 (about US$279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 2 francs, 1807 I (sur 1806), Limoges. Très rare. Coup de poinçon au droit. Beau à Très Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon I, 1804-14, silver two francs of 1807, Limoges mint, 1807/6 overdate. Very rare, attempted piercing on the obverse, fine to very fine.)"

This type was struck 1806-07 with seventeen different date-mintmark combinations, of which the 1806-A is the only one at all common. This type came after the revolutionary calendar was dropped but before the laureate bust was adopted.

Recorded mintage: 81,309[2].

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
