British West Africa 1951 penny

from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71187

British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71187 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. Penny, 1951. London Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A lustrous and well struck one year type with patches of bright almond toning on the reverse."

Recorded mintage: 1,258,000 plus proofs plus more from Kings Norton.

Specification: 9.65 g, copper-nickel, 30.5 mm diameter.
