Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 245

This specimen was lot 245 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 9,500 € (about US$12,410 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "* 1730/29. Felipe V. Madrid. JJ. 8 escudos. Light hairlines. No value indication. Very rare. MBC+ [choice very fine]." This rare type was struck 1729-30. It marks the first appearance of a royal portrait on a gold coin since the days of Ferdinand and Isabella. This portrait was used at Seville until 1738 and at Mexico City until 1746. The Madrid issues are substantially rarer than the Seville issues.
