Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 600

This specimen was lot 600 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,354 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Albert et Isabelle (1598-1621), AV double souverain, s.d. (1612-1621), Bruxelles. D/ Les archiducs trônant de f., Albert ten. une épée et Isabelle ten. un sceptre. La légende interrompue par la base du trône. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Belle couleur. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Albert and Isabella, 1598-1621, undated gold double souverain, Brussels mint. Obverse: the archdukes enthroned, facing, Albert holding a sword and Isabella holding a scepter, the throne interrupts the legend; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Very rare, nice color, Extremely Fine.)"

This type superseded the double albertin d'or of 1601-09. It was struck throughout the Spanish Netherlands until 1657, including at Tournai (Fr-391) and Flanders (Fr-223). This undated specimen is from the very first issue.
