Sincona sale 87, lot 2875

This specimen was lot 2875 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL Königreich, Luis I. 1861-1889. 2000 Reis 1878, Lissabon. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, 2000 réis of 1878, Lisbon mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck in Lisbon 1868-81 and 1888 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 5,000 and 10,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 22,000.

Specification: 3.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, this specimen 3.53 g.
