Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 1665-HS thaler Dav-6544
This specimen was lot 271 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$742 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND, Herzogtum, Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Johann Friedrich, 1665-1679. Taler 1665. Fünffach behelmtes Wappen. Rv. Wilder Mann mit Baumstamm in der Rechten. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich." (Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, duke John Frederick, 1665-79, thaler of 1665. Quintuple-helmeted arms; reverse: wild man with tree trunk in his right hand. Nice Extremely Fine.)
The second specimen was lot 55622 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1665-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Johann Friedrich. Fine Details -- Tooling. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection."
This type depicting the wild man of the forest is recorded for 1665-67 only and is catalogued for more than other types of the same period. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
