Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55614

This specimen was lot 55614 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1665-HS. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II Wilhelm. Extremely Fine Details -- Damaged. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. Georg Wilhelm issued five different thalers in 1665:

  • KM 47.4/Dav-6517B is listed under -Calenberg but was actually struck for Christian Ludwig in -Celle;
  • KM 57.2/Dav-6529 (shown here), wild man with tree in both hands, struck 1664-66, all mintmaster HS;
  • KM 79/Dav-6535, bust obverse, rare;
  • KM 82/Dav-6549, leaping stallion reverse, mintmaster LW;
  • KM 88/Dav-6536, bust obverse, rare;
  • KM 89/Dav-6544, wild man with tree in left hand, struck 1665-67.
