Peru 1759-L JM 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72072 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1759-LM. Lima Mint; Assayers Joseph Rodriguez de Carrasa & Manuel de Iglesia Abarca (J M). Ferdinand VI. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, EF Details. This 4 Reales piece exhibits some smoothing in the fields that accounts for its designation. This deeply toned cob is otherwise quite wholesome and attractive, with sharp details and some alluring luster. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck 1752-1760 for king Ferdinand VI. As a class, pillar coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, though it is more available than the remaining mints.
