Saxony 1764-IFoF thaler Dav-2680a
This specimen was lot 40562 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $3,819. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1764-IFoF. NGC MS-65. Friedrich August III (1763-1827). Lustrous and attractive, a sharply struck gem. From the Demarete Collection." Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector Friedrich August II's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. This thaler was issued the year after the old man died; after a brief reign of Friedrich Christian, Friedrich August III ascended to the electorate under the regency of Xavier (1763-68). This type is fairly inexpensive in circulated condition; it is the first affordable type of the eighteenth century.
