Saxony 1763-FWoF thaler Dav-2676
This specimen was lot 40561 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $9,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Taler, 1763-FWoF. NGC MS-65. Amazing Gem 1763 Saxony Taler. Friedrich August II (1733-63). Highly lustrous and very attractive. A sparkling gem that will grace any collection. From the Demarete Collection." Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. This thaler was issued the year Frederick Augustus died; several thalers (Dav-2677, Dav-2681) are known for the year.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-2676; KM-961; K-541; Schnee-1047.
