from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10152
SB225-10152r.jpg

This specimen was lot 10152 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €336 (about US$350). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Søsling, 1624. Copenhagen Mint. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." This type was struck 1624 only. It was the first søsling (six penning) struck in pure copper rather than billon. Numista states its value as 1/192 speciedaler; this is likely after the devaluation of the 1620's. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-87; Hede-136; Sieg-17; Schou-160; Bruun-5435.
