Denmark 1625 hvid
This specimen was lot 10159 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €168 (about US$175). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Hvid, 1625. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-55. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." This type was struck 1624-25. It was the first hvid struck in pure copper rather than billon. Its value in the sixteenth century was 1/192 speciedaler; we don't know if it was affected by the devaluation of the 1620's. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.03 g, copper, 15.6 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-86; Hede-137; Sieg-10; Schou-68; Bruun-5481.
