Denmark 1624 16 skilling

from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10147

This specimen was lot 10147 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €660 (about US$688). The catalog description^[1] noted, "DENMARK. 16 Skilling, 1624. Christian IV. NGC AU-53. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)." This type was struck 1624-25 and was the first issue of the denomination. Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
