Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 32179

This specimen was lot 32179 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). Testone, 1575. Rome Mint. Gregory XIII. NGC MS-63. Obverse: Bust right in papal regalia; Reverse: Holy Door. A lovely representative of this Holy Year issue, boasting a strong strike with full portrait detail and abundant surface originality. RARE in this Choice quality, and quite attractive even for the grade assigned." Pope Gregory is best remembered today for promulgating in 1582 the reformed calendar known as Gregorian. Berman devotes catalog numbers 1144 thru 1174 and 1211 thru 1220 to the testone of this pontiff. The reverse motto, "IVSTI·INTRABVNT·PER·EAM·", is taken from Psalm 118:20: "This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter."
