France 1814-A franc

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This issue, from the Paris mint, is a better date of a type struck 1809-14. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. This type is the last and probably the most available Napoleonic franc. It was demonetized in 1869.

A complete set of this type comprises 74 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. This date is priced^[1] about six times the common date (1811A).

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Mintage: 42,033^[1], 42,000^[2].
