CNG Lissner sale, lot 347

This specimen was lot 347 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,331. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE, Premier Empire. Napoléon I. 1804-1814. AR Franc. Paris mint; différents: signature/rooster. Pierre-Joseph Tiolier, engraver general. Ch.-Pierre de l’Espine, director. Dated 1813 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem beautifully toned uncirculated. Only two have been encapsulated MS 66, both of this date. Highest graded for date and type." This issue, from the Paris mint, is a common date of a type struck 1809-14. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. This type is the last and probably the most available Napoleonic franc. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 74 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare.

Recorded mintage: 445,789 (second most common date after 1810-A).

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879. This specimen is Ø22 mm, 5.03 g, 6h axis.
