Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1081

This specimen was lot 1081 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1694-N. Montpellier Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-58. Wholesome quality, this Louis d'Or displays bright toned surfaces with very few marks and only the slightly highpoint friction over the designs. The undercoin, often prominently visible on these issue, has been mostly struck out on this piece, making it all-the-more collectible." This type, known as a louis d'or aux 4 L, was struck 1693-1700, mostly over older coins. Twenty-four mints contributed in 1694.

Recorded mintage: 21,835 fn + 299,017 rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge.
