This specimen was lot 22757 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1789-FM. Charles IV (1788-1808). NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines. Transitional issue with the legend 'CAROLUS IV' and the bust of Charles III. Exceptional quality for this normally well worn issue. Good strike, lightly cleaned at one time, now with light toning. Lustrous and attractive." Assayer FM is recorded for the years 1785-1802. The date is common but brings a premium from type collectors. One reales were also struck in the name of Charles III in 1789.
