Chile 1792-So DA 4 reales KM-60
This specimen was lot 71414 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 4 Reales, 1792-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS VF-35. The first date with the proper bust of Charles IV (ordinal IIII). A RARE date, this coin being the finest certified at either PCGS or NGC. This deeply toned example offers well-struck devices and sharp legends. The fields are quite smooth and show only occasional shallow marks. While certainly circulated, this piece was evidently gently handled. A wonderful and wholesome example of this very challenging type. Certain to inspire competitive bidding at auction. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Henry Christensen." This type was issued from Santiago 1792-1808 and is scarce. Four reales struck in the name of Charles IV but with the bust of Charles III (KM 50) also exist for 1792.
