This type was struck in Madrid 1788-97, 1804-08 and in Seville 1803 and 1807. Its specification is the same as Latin American four reales yet, like most metropolitan Spanish coinage of Charles IV, it is much scarcer. The design is also distinctly different. The second specimen was lot 8644 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Great Britain - Spain. 1/2 Dollar, ND (1797). George III. PCGS AU-55. Countermark: Unc Details. Bank of England issue. Type I countermark; bust of George III within oval indent on a 1792-M ME Spain 4 Reales of Charles IV. A beautiful and rarely encountered 1/2 Dollar countermarked issued during the Napoleonic Wars, this specimen has a light golden tone and only the slightest wear. Truly, a spectacular issue. From the Runze Collection."
