Kunker sale 264, lot 3472
Transylvania SB818-21579r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21579 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. 2 Ducats, 1773-H G. Karlsburg Mint. Maria Theresa (1740-80). NGC AU-58. Older veiled and draped bust of Maria Theresa right; Reverse: Crowned double eagle. Nearly fully detailed with significant original luster in the fields that is particularly strong around the eagle on the reverse." This double ducat was struck for the redoubtable Maria Theresia 1765-80 and shows the veiled bust used after the death of Francis I. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary outright.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, .986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-541, KM 650.
