This specimen was lot 31167 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Friedrich August III 'Mining' Taler 1799-IEC MS64+ PCGS, Dresden mint. Yet another stunning rendition from this ever-popular 'Mining' Taler series, imbued with semi-medallic appearances and dripping with originality. Illumination reveals scintillating luster that carries admirably across the argent surfaces while every feature rises in clean contrast against its surrounding elements. The sole finest for this six-year type. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title. This type is listed for 1794-1806 and is accompanied by a regular thaler (Dav-2701), which is quite a bit more common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .752 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 1036, Dav-2703.
