This specimen was lot 31168 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Friedrich August III Taler 1800-IEC MS66 NGC, Dresden mint. Flamboyant flash imbues this gem with definitive character, aided by a bold patina of rose gold that transitions to pure champagne at the flan's center. Struck slightly off center, with no real detriment to the design, which is admittedly interrupted by adjustment marks on the obverse. Ex. Heritage Auction 3044 (January 2016, Lot 29516). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title. This type is listed for 1793-1806 and is accompanied by a mining thaler (Dav-851).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .752 troy oz ASW.
