Saxony 1801-IEC thaler Dav-851
This specimen was lot 953 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxony (German States), taler, 1801-IEC, Friedrich August. Nicely struck AU with some small carbon spots, patches of faint brown toning. Pedigreed to the Zeitlos Collection and purchased from the Ludwig Grabow fixed price list #7 of July 1957, lot #548, with collector's envelope." The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title. This type was issued in small numbers 1793-1806 and accompanied a much more common regular thaler (Dav-850). The pre-1800 issues are catalogued as Dav-2703.
