This specimen is lot 654 in SINCONA sale 1 (Zürich, June 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich Albertiner Friedrich August III. (I.), 1763-1826. Taler 1801. Patina. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, Duchy of Saxony, Frederick Augustus 1763-1826, thaler of 1801. Patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title. This type is listed for 1793-1806 and is accompanied by a mining thaler (Dav-851).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .752 troy oz ASW; this specimen 27,99 g.
