This specimen was lot 7059 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 1/24 Taler, 1798-IEC. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August III. NGC MS-66. An attractive Gem, with sharp strike, flashy fields, and light almond toning on the devices." This type was struck 1764, 1798, 1800-02 and 1806 and is common. The elector of Saxony consistently stood as an ally of Napoleon during his invasions of Germany, for which he was promoted to king in 1806. After Napoleon's fall, Saxony was punished by having half her territory annexed to Prussia but Frederick Augustus kept his new title.
