Sincona sale 38, lot 1308

This specimen was lot 1308 in Sincona sale 38 (Zurich, May 2017), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$780 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Louis XVI. 1774-1792 Louis d`or au buste nu 1786 B. Rouen. Vorzüglich-FDC. Kleine Kratzer im Av. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-92, gold louis of the bare bust of 1786, Rouen mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Minor scratches on obverse.)"

The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Specification: 7.65 g, .917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 7.58 g.

Recorded mintage: 418,848[1].
