Frankfurt 1848 gulden

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71145

This specimen was lot 71145 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Frankfurt. Gulden, 1848. Free City. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just one example, this delightful near-Gem minor presents mostly argent central fields that yield to a captivating partial ring of vibrant iridescence." This denomination, slightly larger than a French two francs, was struck in Frankfurt 1838-63. This date is common for the type, which was issued 1842-55. It was accompanied by a half gulden and double gulden (Dav-642).
